The Design Journey Behind Under The Sink

2 min read

For the Under The Sink World Premiere Costumed Reading, Ezar Co served as the Costume Designer and Executor, transforming the script’s characters into compelling visual identities through thoughtfully crafted costumes. As the inaugural presentation of this original all-ages musical, each costume was designed not only to reflect the personality and essence of its character but also to deepen the production’s emotional impact and enrich its theatrical atmosphere.

Entrusted with the opportunity despite primarily working as an assistant costume designer on local musical theater productions, Ezar collaborated closely with the creative team to bring Director Alisdair Lee’s vision to life. Beginning with the director’s concepts and small pencil sketches, he developed the ideas into refined costume designs, producing detailed final sketches supported by carefully curated visual references. Through this collaborative process, Ezar expanded upon the initial concepts with greater imagination, whimsy, and narrative depth, creating costumes that enhanced both the characters and the storytelling.

Director Alisdair Lee commended Ezar’s contribution, recognizing how the costume design elevated the production beyond the expectations of a traditional staged reading. Together with the lighting and performances, the costumes helped create a more immersive theatrical experience, allowing audiences to engage more deeply with the world of Under The Sink.

Beyond the costumes, Ezar Co also served as the Prop Designer, conceptualizing and designing every prop featured in the production to ensure a cohesive visual language throughout the world premiere. Among these were oversized theatrical props, including a chunk of bleach powder, which was handcrafted by Ezar Co to capture the whimsical scale and playful aesthetic of the musical. Another featured prop, the oversized matchstick, was fabricated by Hannah Torres based on Ezar’s original design. Together, these meticulously crafted props complemented the costumes and scenic elements, further immersing audiences in the imaginative world of Under The Sink.

This addition highlights not only Ezar’s costume design but also his broader contribution to the production’s visual storytelling, demonstrating his ability to develop a unified theatrical aesthetic across both costumes and props.

Written by Alisdair Lee and Beverly Coyle, with music by Alisdair Lee, the production featured musical direction by Minhui Lee and arrangements by Joel Waggoner. The cast included Jamie Wilson, Jordan Andrews, Fay Castro, Radha Cuadro, Alfredo Reyes, and Iya Villanueva, with Senanda Gomez and Antonio Valdez serving as understudies.

Presented as the World Premiere Costumed Reading on April 11–12, 2026, at Studio M, 9699 Pililia, Makati, Manila, Under The Sink marks another milestone in Ezar Co’s growing portfolio of theatrical work. The production demonstrates how thoughtful costume design can transform a performance by strengthening its visual storytelling, enriching its atmosphere, and bringing every character vividly to life.
